The Sustainable Minerals Institute's International Center of Excellence (SMI-ICE-Chile) and the Australian Embassy in Chile are carrying out a series of initiatives to address the challenges related to gender equality in the mining industry in Latin America.

With the support of the Council on Australia Latin America Relations, in May 2024 SMI-ICE-Chile carried out a “Leadership Program for Women in the Mining Industry”, which included the in-person participation of professionals from all over the continent and speakers from The University of Queensland. This program focused on areas such as communication, organisational culture, professional development and collaborative work.

Listen to mining women from all over Latin America

In May 2024, female mining professionals from all over Latin America trained with SMI-ICE-Chile, completing their 'Leadership Program for Women in Mining' for one week, which featured national rapporteurs as well as specialists from UQ, who traveled especially to carry out this program.

Professionals from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Chile were trained with SMI-ICE-Chile in skills and tools that support them in their professional progress and in assuming leadership positions.

In Chile, female participation in mining has grown steadily in recent years, however many barriers persist for them to access decision-making positions in this industry, and for them to aspire to an equal career development with respect to the men.

SMI-ICE-Chile has set out to address this gap that is common throughout Latin America. And as a first step to begin promoting changes in terms of diversity and gender equality, it created this “Leadership Program for women in the mining industry”.

The initiative had the support of UQ and the Australian Embassy in Chile, in addition to the collaboration of the Council for Relations between Australia and Latin America (COALAR).
