As UQ celebrates the 19th Annual Latin American Colloquium, Dr Edgar Brea's journey highlights the lasting impact of people-to-people connections between Australia and Latin America. From international student to academic leader, his story reflects how global talent, education and collaboration continue to enrich our community and contribute to innovation with global impact.
When Edgar arrived at UQ from Venezuela in 2011 to study the Master of Technology and Innovation Management, he brought with him a background in computer systems and 6 years of industry experience. Today, he leads UQ's Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation program, helping shape the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
Following his master's degree, Edgar built a career spanning research commercialisation at CSIRO, technology strategy consulting, data science leadership, a PhD in innovation management, and postdoctoral research at both UQ and QUT. His research now uses computational methods to examine how innovation happens across organisations and platforms, and how artificial intelligence is transforming these processes.
"Everything I research and teach today traces back to the opportunity I had to study at UQ as an international student. The skills, networks and hands-on experience I built here shaped my career, and I'm proud to now help create those opportunities for others," Edgar said.
"The Latin American Colloquium creates space for people, ideas and experiences to come together across borders. My own journey from Venezuela to UQ reflects the power of those connections and the contribution that international students and researchers make to innovation, research and education."
