UQ works with mental health care in Vietnam
The National Adolescent Mental Health Surveys (NAMHS) led by UQ found that nearly 1 in 30 adolescents in Vietnam had a mental disorder in the 12 months prior to the survey, a much lower prevalence compared to Kenya and Indonesia. Associate Professor Holly Erskine emphasised the importance of collecting country-specific data, as cultural and societal factors like family cohesion and authoritative parenting styles may influence these results. The survey also highlighted that adolescents with mental disorders in Vietnam were more likely to experience suicidal behaviors and self-harm, underscoring the need for targeted prevention strategies. The involvement of local organisations was crucial for understanding Vietnam’s unique cultural and geographic factors, aiding in the administration of NAMHS and helping to inform future mental health services and interventions.
