UQ Celebrates Double Success in Prestigious 2025 Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarships

17 March 2025

The University of Queensland (UQ) is delighted to announce that two exceptional students have been awarded the highly competitive 2025 Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship.

Jasdeep Renny and Oliver Taylor will embark on transformative academic journeys in Singapore, furthering UQ’s commitment to fostering global leaders and strengthening ties within the Asia-Pacific region.

Jasdeep Renny will be heading to Nanyang Technological University, while Oliver Taylor will join the National University of Singapore. These prestigious institutions will provide them with unparalleled opportunities to immerse themselves in Singapore’s dynamic academic and cultural landscapes.

Jasdeep Renny, supplied.

Jasdeep, an Electrical and Computer Engineering student at UQ, has a deep-rooted connection to Asia. Jasdeep has felt a strong connection to Asia since childhood, a feeling that intensified when his family lived in Thailand for four years. This experience ignited his desire to explore the diverse cultural roots of the region. Passionate about innovation in humanoid robotics, Jasdeep is eager to immerse himself in Singapore's startup scene, recognising it as Asia's 'startup capital' and a hub for technological advancement. He looks forward to connecting with like-minded individuals from across the continent. Jasdeep anticipates significant personal and professional growth through this experience.

"The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship is a once in a lifetime opportunity to immerse myself in Asia where I will be challenged to adapt to different business practices, cultural nuances, and allow me to establish lasting relationships across Asia."

Oliver Taylor, supplied.

Oliver, a dual degree student in Commerce and Science majoring in Accounting and Biomedical Science, is enthusiastic about the opportunity to gain global regional experience through the Westpac scholarship, especially given his limited previous exposure to Asia. With a deep interest in tropical and rural health, he views Australia's growing relationship with the Indo-Pacific as a significant opportunity. Outside of his studies, Oliver enjoys a variety of activities, including tennis, cricket coaching, pickleball, and exploring local cafes.

Oliver believes this experience will equip him with the necessary skills and leadership qualities to strengthen Australia’s relationship with the Indo-Pacific in the future, as well as to expand medical outreach programs in less-economically developed and tropical communities. He is excited about building connections in this lifelong network.

“Through the regional experience, new networks and different perspectives I will gain in Singapore, I will advance my understanding in the fields of commerce and health.”

The Westpac Asian Exchange Scholarship is a testament to the dedication and talent of UQ students. This year, amidst a highly competitive national selection process, only 37 scholars were chosen, making UQ’s double success a significant achievement.

“We are immensely proud of Jasdeep and Oliver for securing these prestigious scholarships,” said UQ's Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global Partnerships) Mr Brett Lovegrove. “This opportunity will provide them with invaluable experiences and perspectives, enhancing their academic and personal growth, and strengthening their understanding of the Asia-Pacific region. UQ is committed to nurturing students who will make meaningful contributions on a global scale.”

Jasdeep and Oliver will commence their journey with the Westpac Scholars Summit on April 7 and 8, marking the beginning of their onboarding and connection with the broader Westpac Scholars Network. This summit will provide a platform for them to engage with fellow scholars and thought leaders.  Read more here.

UQ congratulates Jasdeep and Oliver on their remarkable achievements and wishes them every success in their upcoming exchange experiences.
