The University of Queensland (UQ) has secured scholarships for two programs under the highly competitive Australia Awards Indonesia Split-Site Master Program, deepening its long-standing partnership with Indonesia and creating new opportunities for collaborative research and education.
Delivered in partnership with leading Indonesian universities and government agencies, the Program supports emerging Indonesian leaders to complete dual master’s degrees across Indonesia and Australia. Scholars undertake at least 12 months of study at an Indonesian university, before spending a further 12 months in Australia, graduating with two master’s degrees in a related field.
The two programs awarded to UQ are:
- UQ–Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM): Double Degree Master of Geographic Information Science (UQ) and Master of Remote Sensing (UGM), delivered in partnership with the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics.
- UQ–Bogor Agricultural University (IPB): Double Degree Master of Agribusiness (UQ) and Master of Agribusiness Science (IPB), delivered in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture.
UQ Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global Partnerships) Mr Brett Lovegrove said the programs reflected the depth of UQ's partnership with Indonesia and a shared commitment to preparing future leaders to tackle complex global challenges.
"The split-site model enables students to benefit from research and education expertise across both countries while fostering close collaboration between governments and universities on shared challenges.
"By bringing together expertise from Indonesia and Australia, these programs will strengthen capability in agribusiness, environmental science and geospatial research, helping to address critical priorities including food security, sustainability and environmental resilience."
Securing the prestigious Australia Awards scholarships was the culmination of a multi-year effort led by UQ's Faculty of Science. Working closely with the School of the Environment and the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability, the Faculty’s international team established early partnerships with UGM and IPB, facilitated reciprocal academic visits, and guided the development and approval of the programs.
UQ Faculty of Science Associate Dean (Academic) Associate Professor Karyn Johnson said the achievement reflected years of sustained commitment by academics and professional staff across the university.
"From our earliest discussions with UGM and IPB to hosting delegations at UQ and finalising the program agreements, we have worked together to create new opportunities for research training and capacity building that will deliver benefits for both Australia and Indonesia,” Associate Professor Johnson said.
Collaboration between UQ and IPB in agribusiness research, training, and academic programs has been strengthened with support from the UQ Global Partnerships Funding Scheme. A grant was awarded in 2022 to facilitate joint program development and a suite of engagement activities involving researchers, lecturers, and students.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia and IPB Rector Professor Alim Setiawan Slamet welcomed the dual degree partnerships, describing them as a strategic investment in Indonesia’s future and a powerful platform for expanding global knowledge, networks and opportunities for students and academics.
Australia Awards is a flagship initiative of the Australian Government. In Indonesia, the program supports national development goals through education, knowledge exchange and institutional partnerships, while fostering enduring people-to-people links and bilateral ties.
