UQ International Development wins Queensland's Export Award for International Education and Training

5 September 2024

The University of Queensland’s International Development Unit (UQID) has been honoured with the prestigious International Education and Training Award at the Premier of Queensland’s Export Awards 2024. This recognition underscores UQID's significant global impact and commitment to empowering communities worldwide.

“UQID leverages the University’s academic and research strengths, together with UQ’s global partnerships to design and deliver projects that find solutions for a diverse range of development challenges," said Dallas Dowsett, Head of UQ International Development.

"The impact of this work is the capacity building we see – for people, their communities and their organisations."

UQID's work also supports progress towards the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for those countries in which they work.

By delivering high-quality education programs and fostering partnerships, UQID is contributing to global development and strengthening Queensland's reputation as a leader in international education and training. The research and innovation insights gained from international development projects inform research and teaching at UQ and the project teams bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, enriching Queensland’s academic landscape.

"UQID's programs strengthen Queensland’s economic and diplomatic ties providing strong and enduring linkages for government, institutions and businesses to build on," Ms Dowsett said.

“It is UQ’s world-class reputation and significant contributions to global development through ID programs that positions and profiles the expertise and capabilities that exist across Queensland. UQ becomes a conduit for global development leadership and the exchange of knowledge, expertise and collaboration for Queensland.”

One of UQID's standout initiatives is the Mekong-Australia Partnership Short Term Awards (MAPSTA) program. Funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) this program equips senior staff and mid-career professionals in Thailand and the Mekong subregion with the skills to tackle regional challenges.

Through MAPSTA, UQID delivers a suite of intensive masterclasses in Australia and regional dialogue events internationally, covering topics such as climate change, gender equality, and public governance. These programs foster cross-cultural learning and collaboration, equipping participants with the knowledge to make a positive impact within their organisations and communities across the Mekong.

UQID's approach to international education is innovative and inclusive. They leverage technology to ensure a commitment to accessibility for participants and stakeholders from countries across the Indo-Pacific.

As the winner of the Queensland Export Award, UQID will now represent the Queensland’s Education and Training sector at the 62nd Australian Export Awards, further profiling UQ and Queensland’s contributions to positive global change and development.
