India's External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met with Chancellor of The University of Queensland (UQ) Mr Peter Varghese AO in Brisbane on 3 November 2024 as part of his visit to UQ for a leadership meeting, engagement with Indian students and Indian community.
During the private meeting Chancellor Mr Varghese had a chance to brief Dr Jaishankar on UQ’s engagement with India and recent Senior Executive Mission, including UQ's ambition to deepen our partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and flagship partner IIT Delhi as well as inaugural discussions for a possible joint sports centre with Jio Institute, and exploring a joint PhD program with Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.
Minister Dr Jaishankar appreciated UQ’s effort and commitment to engage and work with Indian institutions. He agreed that research engagement will yield long term results and benefits to both nations.

EAM Dr Jaishankar is on a 5-day Australia visit. He is also in Brisbane to inaugurate India's 4th consulate in Australia. In Canberra, he will co-chair the 15th Foreign Ministers' Framework Dialogue (FMFD) with Australian Foreign Minister H.E. Ms Penny Wong. EAM Dr Jaishankar will deliver the keynote address at the inaugural session of the 2nd Raisina Down Under to be held in the Australian Parliament House.
EAM is also scheduled to have interactions with Australian leadership, parliamentarians, members of the Indian diaspora, business community, media and think tanks.
UQ has a strong and multifaceted relationship with India, built over decades of collaboration. UQ collaborates with several Indian institutions, including a prestigious joint PhD program with IIT Delhi (IITD): UQ-IITD Research Academy.
On 10 August in Delhi, India, 14 graduates of the UQ-IITD Research Academy were awarded their PhDs during a Convocation ceremony that honoured their commitment, research achievements and bright futures. They comprised the largest graduating cohort to date in a program that is increasingly popular, with 100+ PhD candidates now enrolled.
