Congratulations to the UQ Malaysian Student Association (UQMSA) who were the recipients of the 2016 Australia Malaysia Business Council Queensland (AMBCQ) Annual Ball Young Member of the Year award for their outstanding contribution to the Malaysian community in Brisbane.
While the award is usually given to an individual, the creative, productive and committed partnership between UQMSA and AMBCQ meant the student group was the clear choice.
2016 has seen UQMSA work with AMBCQ on a range of innovative programs designed to give Malaysian students studying in Queensland both practical leadership skills and a chance to showcase their visions for the future.
For the second year running, Think Tank—UQMSA and AMBCQ’s joint competition—asked participants to propose innovative business solutions to global issues. Run with the support of the UQ Idea Hub, competitors were invited to write a proposal and present their ideas.
As part of the competition, UQMSA held its first ever Confidence workshop. Members from AMBCQ presented about translating inner confidence to the work they do. AMBCQ also provided a free presentation seminar so UQMSA members and Think Tank participants could improve their public speaking and presentation skills.
In May, UQMSA and MASCA organised their second ever Career Jumpstart day. This event was designed to give Malaysian students in Queensland knowledge about what makes a good employee.
As invitees to a range of 2016 AMBCQ events, UQMSA members also took advantage of networking opportunities throughout the year. Members attended functions with notaries such as Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk, Mr Zamani Ismail (Deputy High Commissioner from High Commission of Malaysia based in Australia), and Greg Williams (Barrister, Managing Director of One Practice – a legal recruitment and law firm merger business, and Whistleblower of the Year).
Our warmest congratulations to UQMSA! We look forward to seeing what 2017 holds for this talented group of students.
