UQ Alum Raja Juli Antoni is Indonesia’s new Minister of Forestry, part of the ‘Merah Putih / Red and White’ Cabinet that President Prabowo Subianto announced on 20 October 2024.
It followed a ceremony at Jakarta’s Merdeka Palace, located within the Presidential Palace Complex, that saw the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia 'Joko' Jokowi Widodo welcome the newly inaugurated 8th President of Indonesia President Prabawo Subianto.
Antoni is among a group of 48 ministers, 5 ministerial-level officials and 59 vice ministers to serve in the ‘Merah Putih Cabinet’ under Prabawo’s Presidency, alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Their term spans 2024–2029.
Raja Juli Antoni has already played significant roles in the Indonesian administration. He is Secretary General and Founder of the Indonesian Solidarity Party and was Deputy Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning / National Land Agency (June 2022–October 2024). His role included responsibility for the management of the planned city of Nusantara, to be the future capital of Indonesia, located in eastern Kalimantan on the island of Borneo.
Prior to entering politics, Antoni was Executive Director of The Indonesian Institute (TII) and is an active contributor to opinion pieces and articles in the national Indonesian media.
Antoni came to UQ under the auspices of an Australian Development Scholarship (now Australia Awards) and completed his PhD in the School of Political Science and International Studies in 2014 with a dissertation on Religious Peacebuilders: The Role of Religion in Peacebuilding in Conflict Torn Society in Southeast Asia. Prior to his UQ studies he undertook a Masters degree in England at University of Bradford’s Department of Peace Studies (2004), and holds a bachelors degree from IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah (2001).
2024 marks 75 years of diplomatic relations between Australia and Indonesia, with UQ’s connections spanning over 50 years.
For over 10 years, UQ International Development has delivered the prestigious Australia Awards in Indonesia Short Courses for Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).
This artwork commemorates the 75th Anniversary of Australia-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations. Indonesian artist Tutu and Australian artist George Rose collaborated to create a bespoke mural.
