International House embraces Asha Society students

19 December 2024

The University of Queensland’s partnership with the Asha Society India has brought 2 students to study in Brisbane from the slums of Delhi since 2021.

The UQ–India Enabling Scholarship was established through UQ’s partnership with Asha in 2019 to assist India’s disadvantaged and vulnerable students to access tertiary education.

Today a new agreement, between UQ and International House, means that Asha students will have guaranteed accommodation and support on campus at International House. The partnership with International House is welcomed by Global Sponsorship and Mobility Senior Manager Johan Arnberg

“I am delighted about this agreement with International House,” Johan said.

“This guarantee of secure accommodation means that students are set up for success – socially and academically."

"Surrounded by other UQ students and International House residents, they have great access to campus which allows focus on their study and extra-curricular activities. Access to the support and social networks at International House is also reassuring for students studying away from their home networks.”

Asha Society India has worked since 1988 to assist disadvantaged communities in Delhi to improve the lives of more than one million residents in 100 slum colonies. It works with the urban poor to bring about long-term and sustainable transformation to their quality of life.

Founder Dr Kiran Martin was prompted to create the Asha Society after treating people living in Delhi slums during a cholera outbreak. Asha’s work was awarded Best Practice by UN-Habitat and is praised, studied, and replicated by organisations in many countries.
