Through deepening engagement with selected partners – including mining giant Vale and the São Paulo State University (UNESP) – research collaboration is addressing the key challenges of our time, and working towards a safer, healthier, and more sustainable future.

Collaboration in action

  • UQ is rapidly expanding collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany and Sao Paulo State University (UNSEP), Brazil in biotechnology and its impact on future economies.
  • Nine collaborative research projects have been approved for $74,524 in funding in the first round of the 2018 UQ Global Strategy and Partnerships Seed Funding Scheme.
  • University of Queensland experts will head to Brazil and Colombia to join the frontline in the battle against zika virus by sharing research expertise in mapping emerging disease hot-spots and identifying at-risk communities.
  • Gustavo Henrique Junqueira Penitente came to UQ on a study abroad exchange from Brazil in 2014 and has now moved back to Brisbane to work with Delta Group as an engineer.
  • Brazilian medical student Gabriela de Moraes recently won best poster for her research into diabetic blindness at a major European conference, despite having no laboratory research experience before her study abroad year at The University of Queensland.
  • University of Queensland student Bruna Maganhe has spent her summer break caring for native animals and learning from leading zoologists at Brisbane’s Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary.
