Public sector connections with Indonesia enhanced through Australia Awards course in Governance and Public Policy

In 2024, UQ International Development (UQID) delivered a short course to promote skills in the development of public policy and program service delivery in subnational governments, specific to Indonesian provinces including Papua, Nusa Tenggara and Aceh. The course was delivered in Ubud, Bali (15-17 May 2024), then in Brisbane, Canberra and Sydney (10-21 June 2024), and finally in Gorontalo, North Sulawesi, for a post-course workshop (7-9 October 2024).

Subverting social norms around female genital cutting in Somalia

Female genital cutting (FGC) is the practice of cutting or removing part of the female genitalia for non-medical reasons. In many countries of the developing world, a girl’s transition to womanhood can be marked by some form of this tradition. UQ School of Economics researcher Dr David Smerdon has been working with local NGOs in Somalia to find policy solutions to eradicate FGC.

Combating migrant smuggling in Southeast Asia

UQ researchers are promoting regional approaches to make migration safer and criminalise the smuggling of migrants in Southeast Asia. The smuggling of migrants is a major concern in Southeast Asia. Every country in the region is affected as a source, transit region, or destination for migrants seeking protection or prosperity abroad.

PNG Graduate Certificate in Governance and Public Policy

It’s the end of a long journey for twenty women from Papua New Guinea who will graduate from The University of Queensland today. The public servants, all recipients of the government-funded Australia Awards Fellowship-PNG, studied a tailored Graduate Certificate in Governance and Public Policy in the School of Political Science and International Studies.

Australia Awards Indonesia Public Private Partnerships

The Australia Awards Indonesia Public Private Partnerships (PPP) Short Term Award was delivered over a two week period in Australia from 23 May to 3 June 2016 by The University of Queensland’s International Development (UQID) unit. The Award was delivered to twenty-four Indonesian bureaucrats from central, provincial and municipal government that included mid-ranking managers and policy planners (Echelons III and IV).
